There are 3 main hormones used in the female menstrual cycle.
Follicle stimulating hormone, FSH
This is released from the pituitary gland and is the first hormon involved. It matures a egg and tells the ovaries to start producing oestrogen.
Oestrogen
This is released from the ovaries and is the second hormon involved. It stops FSH being produced, this means only one egg is matured and tells the pituitary gland to start producing LH. It also repairs and thinkens the uterus lining.
Luteinising hormone, LH
This is released from the pituitary gland and is the third hormon involved. It causes the egg to be released.
