CFC's
They are a class or organic compounds that contain chlorine and fluorine atoms, due to being inert they were frequently used in the past.
They are gases at room temperature and after use they disperse into the atmosphere and eventually become exposed to UV radiation in the stratosphere.
The C-Cl bond undergoes Homolytic Fission due to this UV:
