Sickle cell anaemia - mostly in sub-saharan Africa. It is an inherited disease. In this condition, the red blood cells have a strong tendancy to loose their shape, from a biconcave disc to a sickle shape, when oxygen levels in the blood are low. This means they are no longer able to carry oxygen and they get stuck in capillaries, leading to great pain and serious damage to tissues. This can be fatal.
