Aim

  • to see gender differences in the course of schizophrenia
  • to test the reliability of DSM II and III

Sample 1

  • 199 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia by DSM II in 1972 - 73
  • 18 - 24 years
  • in hopsital for less than 6 months
  • expected to go back to family after discharge

Procedure 1

  • random sample from 199 of 4 men and 4 women
  • Goldstein and single blind psychiatrist re-diagnosed with DSM III
  • 0.8 agreement
  • Goldstein re-diagnosed 169/199 with DSM III
