- to see gender differences in the course of schizophrenia
- to test the reliability of DSM II and III
Sample 1
- 199 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia by DSM II in 1972 - 73
- 18 - 24 years
- in hopsital for less than 6 months
- expected to go back to family after discharge
Procedure 1
- random sample from 199 of 4 men and 4 women
- Goldstein and single blind psychiatrist re-diagnosed with DSM III
- 0.8 agreement
- Goldstein re-diagnosed 169/199 with DSM III
