Aerobic Respiration:

Breaks glucose down using oxygen to make energy

Oxygen + Glucose ---> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy

Anaerobic Respiration:

Respiration without oxygen

Glucose ---> Lactic acid + energy

At the start of life plants and some animals had to respire anaerobically, When they developed the ability to photsynthesise, they created oxygen, killing early organisms. Now most organisms respire aerobically.
