Structure of gills:
- Made up of gill filaments
- Is a specialised internal gas exchange surface
- Gill filaments are stacked up into a pile
- At right angles to the filaments are gill lamellae - increase the surface area of the gills
How fish gills are adapted for efficient gas exchange:
- Have a large surface area to volume ratio provided by lamellae
- This increases diffusion
- As there…
