·         In 1963 Macmillan was unwell and tired, and resigned.

·         He asked the party elders to select the new leader in the traditional Conservative fashion; i.e. ask the Cabinet who they preferred, and appoint that man.

·         To many it was a straight fight between RA Butler and Lord Hailsham.

·         But Macmillan did not like either man, and instead recommended Lord Home
