The stopping distance of a vehicl is the thinking distance + the braking distance.

The thinking distance is the time it takes for the driver to realise they need to start braking and the time it takes himto put the brakes on.

The thinking distance can be affected by being distracted by a phone or passenger or can be affected by tiredness or drug influence.

The braking distance is how effective the brakes are on stpping the vehicle. This can affected by the weather(icy, wet) or just poor conditions of the vehicle,such as tires or the brakes.

The overall stopping distance can be affected by the speed of the car.
