PLATE TECTONICS - FOLD MOUNTAINS CASE STUDY
The Alps:
Location: Central Europe - the Alps cover parts of France, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovenia and Italy.
Formation: 30 million years ago, collision of African and Eurasian plates.
Population: Approx. 12 million people.
People use the Alps for many different things including:
Farming - The steep upland areas are used to farm goats for food. Other parts are used for growing plants e.g. vineyards in Switzerland.
Hydro-Electric-Power (HEP) - Narrow valleys produce HEP. 60% of Switzerland's electricity comes from the Alps. The electricity produced powers homes and businesses and also exported to cities further…
