C7 Chemstry Revision: Esters

Introduction:

Esters are formed when carboxylic acids react with alcohols.

The reaction takes place in the presence of a strong acid catalyst

e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid.

This is the chemical equation for producing esters:

Carboxylic acid ---> Ester + Water

Esters have distinctive smells and are used in perfumes and food products. They are also found in products like solventsplasticizers and also medicines like paracetamol.

Preparing Esters:

This is an example showing the process of making an ester with the chemical reaction of:

ethanoic acid + ethanol ---> Ester +
