Introduction:
Esters are formed when carboxylic acids react with alcohols.
The reaction takes place in the presence of a strong acid catalyst
e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid.
This is the chemical equation for producing esters:
Carboxylic acid ---> Ester + Water
Esters have distinctive smells and are used in perfumes and food products. They are also found in products like solvents, plasticizers and also medicines like paracetamol.
