Esters

Esters are synthetic smells - used in perfumes and flavourings

ARE MIXTURES OF AN ACID AND AN ALCOHOL

TO MAKE AN ESTER:

  • ADD AN ACID TO AN ALCOHOL
  • ADD DROP OF SULFURIC ACID [CATALYST]
  • WARM TO 60 DEGREES CELCIUS

GENERIC ESTER EQUATION :

ALCOHOL + ACID  ------>  ESTER + WATER

1 of 3

Naming Esters

ESTER NAME ARE A COMBINATION OF THE TWO REACTANTS

THE ALCOHOL NAME FIRST, THEN ACID NAME

FOR EXAMPLE

ETHANOL + ETHANOIC ACID -----> ETHYL ETHANOATE [+WATER]

AND

METHANOL + ETHANOIC ACID -----> METHYL ETHANOATE [+WATER]

BASED ON THE ABOVE INFORMATION, WHAT WOULD THE ESTERS BELOW BE CALLED?

1) ETHANOL + PROPANOIC ACID ------>

2) BUTANOL + METHANOIC ACID ------>

3) HEXANOL + PENTANOIC ACID ------>

2 of 3

Naming Esters Continued
