enzymes

Enzymes

They are protein molecules that speed up chemical reactions that would normally occure very slowly at the temperature of the cell.

The sequence of amino acid determines the shape of the enzyme.

There is a lower amount of energy needed for the reaction to take place (activation energy)

The energy change remains unchanged.

because an enzymes is a catalyst less energy is needed for a reaction to take place.

-Random movement causes collision of enzyme and substrate.

-Enzyme substrate complex forms. There is distortion of the substrate aiding bond breaking or formation.

-Products are released. The enzyme is unchanged.

enzyme + substrate = enzyme substrate complex (e-s complex)
