Energy Flows

HideShow resource information

Energy Losses
the amount of biomass and energy gets less at each succesasive stage of the food chain. this is because energy is lost somehow at each stage. Material is ALWAYS lost in waste, some used for respiration and movement, and maintaining body temperature.

Energy is lost in waste.
Energy is lost in movement. Used for respriation in the cells which supplies the energy needs for the living processes. Muscles use energy to contract, muscles produce heat as they contract.
Keeping a constant body temperature. Heat losses are larger in mammals and birds as they are warmblooded, so they keep their bodies at a constant temperature. They use up energy all the time to keep warm when its cold or cool
