Ecosystem Management-Terai region of Nepal

?

Ecosystem:

  • Terai-agricultural region in south of Nepal, belt of well watered floodplains and is fertile
  • Region is hot and humid and composed of fertile alluvial soil-rich in plant nutrients
  • Extreme biodiversity, many subtropical plants eg pipal and bamboo, also wildlife in forests such as Bengal tiger, sloth bear and Indian rhinoceros
  • People dependent upon Terai forests, important source of national income
  • Due to poverty and corruption, large areas of forests have been cleared for agriculture or to sell timber
  • Removal of forest also impacts the response to monsoon flooding, causing disruption to downstream communities

Sustainable Forest Management:

  • Aim to provide a livelihood for local people…
