attempts- having the mens rea to commit the offence but theres no result from the actus reus 

s1(1) of criminal attempts act 1981- d is guilty if with intent he commits an act that is merely preparatory to the commission of the offence

actus reus 

r v gullefer- for it to be an attempt d must have started the actual crime not just prepared to committ it

r v jones- more than merely preparatory
