computer misuse act

reasons for the act being introduced:

• as computer use grew computer fraud increased and created new problems like how to deal with delibrate access or damage to data
• hacking (breaking into someones system without permission) which is done sometimes for fun or to steal data or to damage a system
• prosecuting hackers was difficult as existing laws on theft didn't cover hacking

The computer misuse act has 3 levels:

Level 1- unauthorised access to computer material:

• e.g. hacking and piracy
• viewing dara you're not permittied to see or illegally copying programs
• maximum penalty- 6 months in jail or  an maximum fine of £5000 or both
