alkanes-
Alkanes are part of the hydrocarbon group; they are the main compounds in fuels such as natural gas, liquid petroleum gas and petrol. The simplest alkane is methane.
The alkanes are oily and do not dissolve or mix with water, alkanes with 1-4 carbon atoms are gases at room temperature, those with 4-17 carbon atoms are liquids at room temperature, and those with more than 17 carbon atoms are solid at room temp.
All alkanes burn and do not react with acids or alkalis.
