2.1 - Giant Ionic Structures

Ionic compunds have giant structures in which many strong electrostatic forces hold the ions togeher. This means they are are solids at room temperature. A lot of energy is needed to overcome the ionic bonds and melt the soldis. Therefore ionic compounds have high melting points and high boiling points.
