Energitics
Heat change in a chemical reaction
- Heat change or empathy change is the amount of energy involved in a reaction
- /\ H - (/\ is for change, H means energy content)
- Unit - KiloJules
Endothermic Reaction
- This reaction gains energy from its surroundings, the /\H is positive
- This causes its surroundings and the reaction mixture to get colder
- An example of an endothermic reaction is Thermal Decompostion
- Bond breaking is endothermic
- In an energy diagram for an endothermic reaction, the reactans are lower at the start of the graph than the products at the end of the Graph
Exothermic Reaction
- This reaction loses energy from its surroundings, the /\H is negative
- This causes the reaction mixture and its surroundings to get hotter
- An example of this is burning or a neuteralisation reaction between acids and Alkalis
- Bond forming is exothermic
-
In an energy diagram of an Exothermic reaction, the reactants is higher at the start of the graph than the products at the end of the graph.
