Hackman & Oldeham's Model:

  • based on the belief that the task itself is vital for employee motivation
  • suggested that there are five job characteristics that can be studied to help predict job satisfaction; skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, job feedback

  • authority- who is in charge
  • span of control- how many people someone is in control of
  • hierarchy- ranking according to authority
  • delegation- passing down responsibility
  • centralisation- single authority in charge
  • decentralisation- the transfer of authority from single to local
