Decay

Plants need nutrients for healthy growth

These nutrients include:

  • Nitrates - make protein
  • Mineral ions - make chlorophyll

Animals get their nutrients by eating plants or eating other animals which have eaten the plants.

Every living thing will eventually die - their body still contains the nutrients

Plants contain organic waste

It is important to return the nutrients back to the soil so that the life cycle can continue

Some small animals and microorganims help to do this through the process of decay

The animals (called detritus feeders
