B1 Cell Structure and Transport
Microscopes - Electron vs. Light
Light Microscopes:
- Magnify several hundreds (school microscopes)
- Relatively cheap and portable
- Uses a beam of light
Electron Microscopes:
- Ability to see subcellular structures
- Uses a beam of electron
- Magnify up to x2,000,000
- High magnification and resolution
- Expensive and very big
- Has to be kept in controlled environments (temperature, humidity etc.)
Magnification = Image size / Real image
Resolution is the ability to distinguish between two points. Light microscopes have a resolving power 200nm, electron microscopes have 0.2nm
