Microscopes - Electron vs. Light

Light Microscopes:

• Magnify several hundreds (school microscopes)
• Relatively cheap and portable
• Uses a beam of light

Electron Microscopes:

• Ability to see subcellular structures
• Uses a beam of electron
• Magnify up to x2,000,000
• High magnification and resolution
• Expensive and very big
• Has to be kept in controlled environments (temperature, humidity etc.)

Magnification = Image size / Real image

Resolution is the ability to distinguish between two points. Light microscopes have a resolving power 200nm, electron microscopes have 0.2nm
