The respiration process releases energy. There are two types of respiration, aerobic (needs oxygen) and anaerobic (doesn’t need oxygen). Some organisms can survive on anaerobic respiration alone, they often live in extreme environments

ATP stands for Adenosine triphosphate

It is a single step reaction (hydrolysis of ATP) and so does not take very long. This makes it useful in transferring energy.

When ATP has one phosphate removed, the resulting molecule is called ADP. Adenosine di- phosphate. One of the three phosphates is removed leaving two of them.
