Chapter 1

Characterisation of Old Major

Old Major is characterised as "wise" and "benevolent" and "highly regarded". His speech is intelligennt and visionary. He declares that "All men are enemies. All animals are comrades." but his vision might be too optimistic as immediately following his declaration, the dogs chased the newly emerged rats back into their holes.

Old Major's speech and vision

All the animals (except Moses) come to Old Major. He is well respected and all the animals show their support for Mjor's decleration that "All animals are comrades" by voting with "an overwhelming majority", that the rats are to be considered comrades. Major's emotive vocabulary choices emphasise the mistreatment of animals from birth to death, eg "we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty". Major explains how mankind exploits animals, reaping all the benefits of their hard work.

Characterisation of Boxer and Clover

Boxer has a "somewhat stupid appearance" but is "respected for his steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work". He gently avoids stepping on the smaller creatures. Major warns him that he wil be sent to the knacker as soon as he was no longer productive. Clover is a "stout motherly mare" who is protective and gentle. She shields the ducklings and is a reassuring presence for the cat.
