The Birling Family - wealthy, Mr Birling is a symbol of capitalism
Mr Arthur Birling - capitalist, obsessed with making money and he is obsessed with class status
Mrs Sybil Birling - Mr Birling's social superior (she's from a higher class), she's described as a "cold" woman

Summary
Everyone is celebrating Sheila and Gerald's engagement. However their celebrations are soon stopped when Edna (the maid) announces that Inspector Goole is here to see Arthur and he tells everyone that Eva Smith has just died in the infirmary. Goole shows a photo of Eva to Arthur…
