Unsaturated --> contains at least one carbon-carbon double bond 

Bonding in alkenes, a hybrid orbital form each carbon overlaps to form a double bond 

Alkenes 

  • Double bond is not just two single bonds. 
  • One of the pairs of electrons is held between the two carbons but the other is in a molecular orbital above  and below the plane of the molecule.
  • Single bonds are referred to as sigma bonds.
  • The second bond in a double bond is called pi bond.
  • Electrons in the pi bond can move anywhere within the orbital. Alkanes have an area of high electron density.
