Court of Chancery

Was used to try and uphold fair justice,

Dealt with issues including: enclosure, contracts, and wills,

Became too popular so justice was slow.

Court of Star Chamber

Established by the Act of Parliament 1487,

Became the centre of government and justice,

Aim: to extend cheap and fair justice from 1516,

"too successful" - had to set up an overflow tribunal to deal with the pressure.

Tudor Subsidy

Wolsey didnt invent it but changed the way they collected it, 

Set up a national committee instead of using local commissioners,

Included realistic assessments of taxpayer's wealth,

Raised extraordinary revenue for the war with France,

The amount was insufficent.

Eltham Ordinances

Introduced in 1526,

Aim: to reform the Privy council's finances,

Reduced the amount of gentlemen in the privy chamber,

Replaced Henry's Groom of the Stool - from Sir William Compton to Henry Norris

The 'King's Great Matter'

Mid 1520s

Catherine was past child bearing age,

Henry fell in love with Anne Boleyn,

Wolsey needed to get a papal dispensation for an annulment = major problem,

Henry claimed his marriage was wrong in God's eyes as Catherine was previously married to Arthur

The Fall

Wolsey failed to get an annulment,

Arrested on the 4th November 1530, 

Died on the 29th November

Finance

The 'Amicable Grant'

Additional tax to fund Henry's expedition to France. Caused rebellion in East Anglia and widespread resistance. 

The Balance Sheet

Raised £322,099 in subsides, £240,000 in clerical taxes and £260,000 in forced loans. Depsite this, government expenditure between 1509 and 1520 was £1.7million.
