Weaknesses of the multi-store model of memory

There is an OVER-EMPHASIS ON ACCOUSTIC ENCODING in STM.

This is because whether or not we use accoustic encoding probably DEPENDS ON WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO REMEMBER: things that we can give names to easily e.g "pig" or "book" are likely to be encoded accoustically. Things we can't distinguish by names are not: visual material e.g faces we can't put a name to.

There is a PROBLEM WITH THE REHEARSAL PROCESS for getting info. into LTM.

SOME INFORMATION WE RECIEVE GOES INTO LTM WITH NO REHEARSAL AT ALL, such as remembering that you have been somewhere or seen someone before.

Also, SOME INFORMATION CAN BE REHEARSED MANY TIMES BUT STILL CAN'T BE REMEMBERED.

This suggests that rehearsal is one of many processes involved in laying down a memory in LTM.
