The 4 cardinal virtues

  • These are the four human characteristics that were fundamental to form the basis of a moral life 

1. Fortitude (courage) = this is the ability to overcome fear - by having discipline, patience and endurance 

2. Temperance = self-discipline with our physical appetites e.g. the ability to resist temptation 

3. prudence = associated with wisdom, the ability to resist the temptation of casual sex 

4. Justice = encourages a person to look outward from themselves and to make a stand when they see an injustice is commited

The revealed 3 virtues

1. Faith = total belief in god

2. Hope = the belief that god is eternally present with you and therefore never to fall into despair or never give up on gods love

3. Charity = unconditional love to help our neighbours

Exterior and interior acts

  • Exterior act = the deontological actions a moral agents carries out. E.g. helpin an old person across the road 
  • interior act = the intentions behind it actions. E.g. Having compassion as the intention in helping the old person cross the road
