INTRODUCTION

Introduced to ensure:

  • uk cuts carbon emission by 80% by 2050 - set against 1990 baseline Enables Uk: low carbon economy 

Sets in place legally binding framework:

  • allowing government to introduce measures which will:
    • acheive carbon reduction
    • mitigate and adapt to climate change

  • —  Improve carbon management, helping the transition towards a low-carbon economy in the UK
  • —  Demonstrate UK leadership internationally, signaling we are committed to taking our share of responsibility for reducing global emissions

KEY PROVISIONS OF THE ACT INCLUDE

  • —  To produce less domestic waste and to recycle more of what is produced
  • —   To make provision about the collection of household waste
  • —   To confer powers to make provision about charging for single use carrier bags – already in place in Wales
  • —  To make provision about carbon emissions reduction targets
  • —  To provide for a system of carbon budgeting
  • —  To establish a Committee on Climate Change
  • —  To confer powers to establish trading schemes for the purpose of limiting greenhouse gas emissions or encouraging activities that reduce such emissions or remove greenhouse gas from the atmosphere
  • —  To make provision about adaptation to climate change
