Characteristics of Supervolcanos

  •  supervolcano - a mega colossal volcano that erupts at least 1000km3 of debry
  • An erruption could be 100 - 150 times bigger than mount st helens in 1980
  • They have a flat appreance, this is because they are a collapsed magma chamber  this depression in the ground this is a Caldera.

  • Magma beneath yellow stone is shifting
  • 
  • increasing activity and the chamber rises by an  half an inch each year
  • the chamber is believed to be 80km long 40km wide and 8km deep
  • an eruption occured 2 million years ago, and 630 000 years ago which means we are due one

  • A cloud of ash rising 20km would be formed
  • It is predicted it would travel westward towards California
  • would kill  1 in 3 people affected
  • 87 000 would die
  • buildings within 1,000 km would be covered in 15 cm of ash
