HPA

  • From cortex of adrenal gland (cortisol) 
  • Too much cortisol can lead to cushings syndrome 
  • Glazer et al Tested NK cell in blood of med students 1 month before and during exams (75 students) 
    • During exams NK cells less active 
  • Enlarged adrenal glands on post mortems 
  • Stress and cortisiol can not see cause and effect
    • Dimsdale said other factors could effect levels

Type A or B

  • Friedmand and Roseman say A is more likely to get CHD and more fight/flight often 
  • 3154 men 39-59 catagoriesed as A or B from interveiws and 8 years later 275 develped heart disease 
    • 70% were types 
    • A- 12.8 had heart attack 
    • B- 6 had heart attack 
  • But mostly western and on men only 
  • A is more stereoypes for men in western society 
  • Most pple inbetween A and B (type C personality) so mre complicated than initially thought

  • Kabasa say 3 parts 
    • Control 
    • Challenge 
    • Commitment 
  • Meant to buffer away stress making person in control 
  • See stress as opportunity for growth and develoment 
  • Hardiness protects against illness effects of stress (Kabasa) 
  • Sheperd said women only needed challenge nt the other two
    • Predict illness for men not so much for women
  • Most research is done on men

Life events

  • Measured by SRRS measured in life change units
  • Rahe studies 2684 naval officers who completed SRRS before going on tour and checked illness for 6-8 month during tour 
    • Positive +0.118 corrilation between life events and illness 
  • But corrilation is not causation 
  • Change is subjective to the person (social desirablity bias)

Daily Hassles/ HASUP scales

  • Hassels is minor day-to-day things 
  • More hassels = more stress 
  • Need more or equal uplifts to combat stress 
  • Accumilation effect (life event + hassel/trigger = stress) 
  • Strong corrilation between health and hassels but not life events and health (Delongis)
