Waterfalls and Gorges

  • waterfalls for where rivers flow over hard rock followed by softer rock
  • soft rock is eroded more then hard rock = step
  • as water goes over step = more erosion
  • steep drop is formed =waterfall
  • hard rock is undercut by erosion and eventually collapses
  • this eroded rock erodes the foot of the waterfall = plunge pool
  • the waterfall retreats due to undercutting leaving a gorge.

Interlocking Spurs

  • upper course of a river = vertical erosion creating v- shaped valleys
  • they aren't powerful enight to erode laterally so wind around hills that are in their path
  • hillside that interlock as the river winds round them are called interlocking spurs.
