Psychological Abnormality; Deviation from ideal mental health

 Jahoda's criteria

Jahoda identified six criteria necessary for ideal mental health. She suggested that if you lack one of these criteria you may suffer from a mental disorder;

1)Positive attitudes towards yourself
2)Self actualisation of ones potential
3)resistance to stress
4)personal autonomy
5)accurate perception of reality
6)adapting to the enviroment

1)Possitive attitudes towards yourself

-Having reasonably high self esteem
-Have a feeling of self-worth

Without being big headed or attention seeking.

-Be the best you can be

3)Resistance to stress

-Must be able to deal with everyday stresses and strains
-Must be flexable in their ability to work through potentially difficult situations

-Being independent
-Not relying on others all the time

5)Accurate perception of reality

-View of the world must not be disorted in any way
For example; you dont think everyone is untrustworthy or watching them; parania.

6)Adpating to the enviroment

-Ability to cope in new situations/enviroments
For example; you must act differently at weddinsg to funderals and adapt to the 'normal' way of acting.

2)What is concidered mantally healthy varies across cultures

Strength;

1)It emphasises what is healthy rather than concentrating on illnesses.
