P3 - Energy recources

1 of 6

P3.1 - Energy demands.

  • Most energy - burning fossil fuels, coal oil or gas.
  • Nuclear power, biofules and renewable sources also genertate some energy.
  • Uranium or platinum - fuel in nuclear power station. More energy is released than burning fossil fuels
  • Biofules - renewable energy source

P3.2 - Energy from wind and water

  • Wind turbine - electricity generator. Turbine blades turned by wind.
  • Wave genorator - motion of waves to make turbine move up and down.
  • Hydroletric turbine - generators turned by water running downhill.
  • tidal power stations - traps water from high tide and uses it to turn turbines.

P3.3 - power from earth and sun...

  • Solar cells - flat solid cells that use suns energy to generate electricity.
  • Solar heating panels - suns energy to heat water
  • Geothermal energy - energy from radioactive substances in earth.
  • Geothermal power station - water pumped onto hot rocks underground to prosuce steam, driving turbines at earth surface.

P3.4 - Energy and the environment...

  • Fossil fuels - greenhouse gases when burnt - global warming.
  • Used nuclear fuels - radioactive waste
  • Renewable energy sources -never run out, dont produce harmful waste products and can be used in remote places. Not always reliable can damage habitatas as they take up a large area
  • Can be evaluated in terms of reliability, environmental effecects and waste.

P3.5 - Big energy issues...

  • Gas power stations - can meet variations in electricity demand.
  • Nuclear power stations - expensive.
