P1 - Microwaves and Satellite Communication

How are microwaves used in satellite communication?

?

Microwaves and Satellite Communication

  • communication to and from satellites uses microwaves
  • this includes satellite TV and satellite phones
  • the wavelength of the microwaves need to be suitable for passing through clouds and water vapour in Earth's atmosphere so that absorbtion is limited
  • signal from a transmitter is transmitted into space
  • then it's received by receiver dishes on satellite
  • satellite transmits signal back to earth with different direction
  • signal received by satellite dish on ground
  • microwaves can also be used by remote-sensing satellites
  • these monitor oil spills, iceburg movement, rainforest deforestation, etc.
