How some cells are specialized for their functions

erythocytes:

  • Is bioconcave in shape allowing a larger surface area for gas exchanges
  • No nucleus which gives more space for haemoglobin

Epithelial Cell:

  • Some of epithelial cells have cillia eg in trachea to waft dirt and dust up and out the body

Sperm cell:

  • Flagellum to allow it to swim to the egg
  • The acrosome contains digestive enzymes to allow it to penetrate the egg cell surface
  • Contains lots of mitochondria to give the sperm lots of energy for it to swim

Palisade cells:

  • Has thin cells for rapid intake of CO2
  • Contains lots of chloroplast so it can absorb alot of sunlight for photosynthesis

Root hair cell:

  • Has thin permeable cell to allow rapid intake of water and ions
  • Has large surface area for absorption
  • The cytoplasm has a lot of mitochondria  to allow active transport

Guard cell:

  • Has thin outer wall and a thick inner wall which forces is to bend outwards and open the stomata
  • In light they take up water and become turgid
