Role demands

at work people have a variety of roles, and expectations placed on them can be stressful. Researchers have been active in studying such demands. Role ambiguity: a lack of clarity regarding one's work roles. Role conflict: having multiple contradictory demands at work. Demands stressors significantly impact many aspects of employees' lives - at work and at home. Meta-analysis found role ambiguity negatively correlated with job satisfaction, which in turn predicted organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB). Role conflict was negatively associated with both job satisfaction and OCB (Eatough et al., 2011). Additionally, another meta-analysis examined the relationship between occupational stressors and physiological symptoms - found role conflict had significant association with five out of eight physical symptoms studied, including back pain, gastro problems, and sleep disturbances. Role conflict correlated significantly with fatigue (Nixon et al., 2011).
