Jack is presented as a dangerous character from the beginning
"Ugly without silliness" - Jack is not a friendly person
"Tall, thin and bony" - Description of Jack's body
"Two light blue eyes" - Innocent eyes but a hatred inside of him that isn't yet shown
Roger is also dangerous from the outset
"Furtive boy whom no one knew" - he has something to hide and he's an outsider from the beginning
