What is it?

Personal hygiene is how you care for your body. This practice includes bathing, washing your hands, brushing your teeth, and more. It is critical for both physical and emotional well-being.

  • Hair tied back or covered 
  • Regular brushinf of teeth
  • Appropriate protective clothing
  • Open wounds covered
  • Regular showering and hair washing
  • Appropriate use and disposal of tissues and antiseptic wipes
  • No jewellery and no nail polish
  • Correct hand washing rountines

Rules when preparing/serving food

  • Wash and dry hand thoroughly before and after touching food
  • Avoid coughing and sneezing near food
  • Wash hand straight after using a tissue ad before touching any food or utensils
  • Food should not be prpared by anyone unwell as it can spread bacteria
  • Cuts and scratches should be covered with a waterproof plaster
  • A clean apron should be worn to prvent bacteria going from clothes to food

How it protects individuals

  • Prevents transfer of bacteria
  • Removes bacteria
  • Reduces risk of spreading infection
  • Prevents cross contamination

Hand washing technique

  • Wet hands with water
  • Apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces
  • Rub hands palm to palm
  • Rub back of each hand with palm of other hand with fingers interlaced
  • Rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced
  • Rub with back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked
  • Rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand using a rotational movement
  • Rub tips of fingers in opposite palm in a circular motion
  • Rub each qrist with opposite hand
  • Rinse hands with water
  • Use elbow to turn tap off
  • Dry thoroughly with a single-use towel
  • Hand washing should take 15-30 seconds

Hands should always be dried thoroughly after washing
