  • Finnis rejects aquinas' five primary precepts and replaces them with the basic good 
  • they are self-evident and universal 
  • finnis says they are self-evident as they are concerned with practical reasoning which is once red with how to act. 
  • He says they are derived from gods law and just obviously exist

Making decisions

  • According to Finnis doing good is to follow the seven basic goods and the nine practical reasons and doing bad is the opposite of this 
  • the seven basic goods and the nine requirements of practical reason specify our overarching moral structure ad moral goals

The common good

Common good 

  • this means that each member of the community can pursue the basic goods 

authority 

  • the way to achieve the common good was that actions need to be performed by the whole community 
  • to do this community needs the rule of law to allow a stable society

Application

Immigration 

  • basic goods such as religion, support immigration and requirements of practical reason such as equality also support immigration 

capital punishment 

  • The basic good of life can support capital punishment along with the requirement of community 
  • the basic good of life could also not support capital punishment along with don't harm
