The History of Anaesthetic

  • surgery had had to be as quick as possibe so the person doesn't bleed out and die
  • 25% of patients died from infections after amputation
  • Joseph Lister invented antiseptics (carbolic acid) - he only sprayed the air at first before then realising that the hands, wounds and surgical instruments also need to be sterilised
