THESE ARE TIPS FOR THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FORMS YOU MAY BE ASKED TO WRITE IN QUESTION 1 OF THE CAMBRIDGE IGCSE ENGLISH EXAM

Text types include: letter, report, journal, speech, interview, newspaper report or magazine article.

Letter

  • Audience - Informal/Formal?
  • 'Dear Sir/Madam' (Formal) or 'Hi Polly' (Informal) 
  • Introduction
  • Ending (Formal - Your's sincerely/yours faithfully or informal - see you soon/best wishes)
  • Formal - avoid shortened words (don't, i'm etc)

Report

  • Informative/Fact Based
  • Accounting events
  • Chronological
  • Written with purpose/audience in mind
  • Clear
  • Use quotes where appropriate
  • 5 Ws
  • 3rd Person

Journal/Diary

  • When/Date 
  • Begin in present, change to past
  • Informal
  • Focus on key moments that are memorable
  • 1st Person
  • Capture voice

Speech

  • Audience (very important)
  • Direct language "you"
  • 1st Person
  • Retorical Questions
  • Humour?
  • Present tense - could go back to past to recall an event
  • Strong, lively sense of voice
  • Emotive language
  • Short Sentances

With a speech, you have to develop your voice/tone and choose language techniques to suit the audience.

Interview

  • Names on the left hand side
  • EMOTIONS IN BRACKETS
  • Between 2 people
  • 1st Person
  • Provide 2 different characters (change voice)
  • Dialogue is realistic with interruptions
  • Don't forget to use proper english/grammar

Newspaper Report

  • 5 Ws in first paragraph
  • Need to include facts and key details
  • EXAGGERATE
  • Audience - is it a local newspaper (may not need too much backgound information) or national newspaper?
  • How and Why sometimes mentioned later rather than at the beginning
  • 3rd person
  • Balanced - provide both sides if an argument
  • Conclusion

Magazine Article

  • Gain audience's attention
  • Formal/informal - AUDIENCE
  • Should give opinions as well as facts
  • Strong conclusion (main ideas)
  • Think about what the aim of the article is
  • Retorical questions
  • Address the reader directly
