  • Places where plumes of magma rise from the mantle 
  • They punch a hole in the lithopshere and crust 
  • They erupt at the surface 
  • Associated with intense volcanic activity and eruptions of basaltic lava 
  • Hawaii is the most volcanically active location in the world
  • It lies on a hot spot at the centre of the Pacific Plate 
  • Other Hot Spots include Iceland and Yellowstone
