Processes

Freeze thaw weathering- water fills a crack and freezes, the crack then widen and this process repeated until the block of rock breaks off- scree

erosion-

  • abrasion- small sharp edged rocks and rock particles embedded in the bottom of the glacier wear away the bedrock
  • plucking- blocks of bedrock freeze to the bottom of the glacier and get plucked out as the glacier moves down the valley

Transportation-

  • rotational slip- thin layer of water beneath the glacier means it sometimes slides forwards causing a curving motion
  • buldozing- glacier retreats move forward pushing debris ahead

Deposition- ice melts most at the snout of a glacier, also occurs if thin ice goes around an obsticle so cannot carry much

erosion landforms

corrie- hollows containing a small glacier, ice then moves causing the hollow to erode into a steep 'armchaired' shape- the ice then melts leaving a lake/tarn

aretes- steep-sided ridge formed when 2 glaciers form in parralel valleys

pyramidal peaks- a pointed peak with 3 sides fors when corries are cut backwards

truncated spur- glaciers push straight througha valley removing the ends of the interlocking spurs

glacial troughs- steep sided valley with a flat bottom (changes from a V shape to a U shape due to a glacier deepening the valley)

hanging valleys- formed by small glaciers flowing into a main glacier (old tributory valleys)

transportation and deposition landforms

erratics- large bolders deposited by glaciers

drumlins- low hills formed when melting ice is pushed forward over a low land area

morraine-

  • Lateral- long mound of material deposited where the side of the glacier was
  • medial- long mound of material deposited in the centre of the valley where 2 glaciers meet
  • terminal- builds up at the snout of the glacier when it remains stationary
  • ground- a thin layer of material deposited over a large area as the glacier melts

erosional landforms-

  • corries- Lyn Cau
  • aretes- Craig Cau arete
  • glacial trough- contains Tal-y-Lyn lake

Depositional landforms-

  • drumlins and outwash- low land areas
  • rock debris
  • morainic ridges

zipwire- Glenridding

glaciated area used for toursim- lake district

Attractions:

  • Beatrix Potter's house
  • national park since 1951- many mountains and lakes to see

tourism impacts:

  • social- 89% of visitors arrive by car- congestion
  • economic- tourists spent £1000 million in 2014- creates jobs
  • environmental- nain sites are overcrowded- footpath erosion and litter

Management:

  • traffic
    • several dual carriage ways built to improve access
    • speed bumps introduced in villages
  • footpath erosion
    • upland path restoration project have repaired paths and created steps
    • still 100's of paths needing constant maintenance
