Descriptive writing

When writing a descriptive piece always:

Start with describing the atmosphere (Surroundings) is it:

  • What do you want your readers to see?
  • Is it light or dark?
  • Is it hot or cold? (temperature)
  • Is it silent or noisy?

Use Metaphors or Similes for this

"Frost glistened on the street like diamonds"

"The fog touched the back of their necks like a cold hand"

Start with describing the atmosphere

  • What would catch someone's eye
  • The shops
  • Window displays
  • The traffic
  • Is it cold outside?

Then describe what is happening in a shop

  • Describe the sounds?
  • What do the sales assistants look like?
  • What does inside the shop look like?  How are the items placed around the shop? messy/tidy
  • are there a lot of people inside the shop "the people were packed inside the shop like sardines" SIMILE
  • describe the customers, just those that catch the eye. "Two womwn squabbled over a dress like alley cats" SIMILE
