Essex Rebellion

When?

1610

Why? 

Essex had a rivalry with Robert Cecil and had fallen out of favour with Elizabeth who had cancelled his monopoly on Sweet wines after he made peace in Ireland against her wishes. 

What happened?

Essex was banished from Court by the Privy Council. He gathered 300 followers and took 4 Council members hostage. Elizabeth offered the followers a pardon if they left Essex. most of them took the pardon and the rebellion fell apart. 

Consequences?

Highlighted the weaknesses in Elizabeth's government
Essex was executed February 1601 and Elizabeth re- established her power over the government.
