Test relationship between data and theory. Cannot measure the whole population, so must take a sample and infer from the estmate the true average. 

Includes testing differences between means, the degree of relationship between variables etc. Examples used are T-tests, Chi-square, Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon etc.
