                                        OSMOSIS

Water will move through any membrane it can as long as it is moving to an area with a higher concentration.  These areas are called hypertonic, and areas with lower concentrations are called hypotonic Osmosis is, in short, the process by which water diffuses through a membrane.  When water moves passively through a cell membrane, that's osmosis.

concentration gradient

A concentration gradient occurs when a solute is more concentrated in one area than another.

solute When you dump a spoon full of salt into a glass of water, you are creating a solution. The solute is the salt, or NaCl. The solvent is water, or H2O.Concentration gradient exampleWhat is the H+ gradient in mitochondria? - Biology Stack Exchange
