Correlation

A mathematical technique in which the researcher investigates an association between two variables, called co-vaiables.

Shows the strength and direction of an association between co-variables.

(+) useful preliminary tool for research/ provide a precise and quantifiable measure of the strength and direction of the relationship between variables

(-) doesn't show cause/effect/ associations may also be affected by intervening variables

Co-variables

The variables investigated in a correlation.

They are not IVs and DVs because the correlation investogates the association between the variables rather than trying to show cause-effect.

2 of 5

Positive correlation

As one co-variable increases, as does the other co-variable

3 of 5

Negative correlation

As one co-variable increases, the other co-variable decreases

4 of 5

Zero correlation

There is no relationship between the co-variables
